Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were the big winners at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last night (26th January), but it was their success in the Best Rap Album category that attracted the most attention, as the pair defeated albums by Drake, Jay Z, Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar.
Going into the ceremony, the award had seemingly been destined for Kendrick, whose 2012 album 'Good Kid, M.A.A.D City' was both critically acclaimed and embraced by the wider music world. But it was Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' 'The Heist' that won last night - and even Macklemore admitted that he felt Kendrick should have won.
On Instagram, he posted a screengrab of a text he had sent to Kendrick in the wake of his win:
In a message accompanying the screengrab, Macklemore said:
"My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album... I'm honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that's taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it's proper respect.. With that being said, thank you to the fans. You're the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That's what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys."
