Following the success of his YouTube mini-series entitled Shiro's Story, London rapper Rapman is about to release a new film called Blue Story, which he has directed.
Ahead of the movie's launch, we take a closer look at the life and career of Rapman, and what Blue Story is all about.
Who is Rapman?
As well as being the mastermind behind tracks like 'Pay As You Go', 'Tough Love', 'Mummy' and 'All We Need Is Us', London rapper Rapman (aka, Andrew Onwubolu) is an award-winning film director who created Shiro's Story; a gritty three-part series that explores the world of rap, drugs and violence. It even features Chicken Connoisseur, Elijah Quashie.
All three episodes have received over 6million views since they were uploaded to YouTube in 2018, and Rapman has even expressed interest in collaborating with Netflix to put his work on the streaming site.
What is Blue Story about?
Following two rival groups of teens in the capital, Rapman's new movie Blue Story is a crime drama that highlights gang violence in south London.
Many of the storylines within the movie are based on Rapman's own experiences; while his mum sent him to a reputable school in Peckham as a teen, Andrew was living in nearby Lewisham at the time, which brought its own issues.
Speaking to The Guardian, Rapman explained: “I went through school fighting my way out the gates every day. I ended up joining the gang the kids accused me of being a part of, that I had nothing to do with. If you can’t beat them, join them. I was then doing all the stuff that gang members did.”
He added: "You do things for money, for status. You want to prove you’re really deserving of your place, so you’re the one to throw the first punch. Gang violence, gun crime, knife crime, drug-dealing, all the things you hear rappers rapping about, that’s the lifestyle I came from. If you see my older songs in 2013, I’m glamorising the money you get from selling drugs and doing crime – until I realised this isn’t helping anyone.”
Is there a trailer?
Yup, there sure is! You can watch the full clip above.
When will it be released?
Rapman has teamed up with Paramount Pictures to bring Blue Story to the big screen.
The film is scheduled to land in cinemas in the UK on 22 November, 2019.
How can I watch Blue Story?
As it stands, the movie will only be available in cinemas upon initial release.
That said, the star has spoken about wanting to share his work on Netflix, to reach out to a wider audience.
