According to TMZ, the two men who attacked Jussie shouted “This is Maga country” before pouring bleach on him and putting a noose around his neck.
MAGA is an accronym for Make America Great Again, a slogan used by Donald Trump which can often be seen written on red hats - something which Kanye West can often be seen wearing.
The 36 year old was allegedly attacked at 2am on Tuesday night and reported the incident to the Police. Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for Chicago Police said that Smollett 'had reported that two men approached him and began shouting racial and homophobic slurs'.
The Police report then states that 'the men then struck him in the face and poured an unknown chemical substance on him before one wrapped a rope around his neck'.
After the shocking attack was revealed, there was an outpouring of support for the actor across social media with a number of stars showing their support, including John Legend.
The music star wrote, 'Sending love to Jussie and the Smollett family after this horrific attack. We support you and pray that you find peace and justice.'
